Beer of the Year: Best New Style (to me) of 2008

Wonderful thing, this connoisseuring. I get the feeling I will find more and more styles the deeper I get into it. The best new (to me) style of 2008, Grand Cru. They say a Belgian Strong Ale. Typically higher than 11%, yet very smooth. Not as high carbo as the basic belgian abbey ales.

Hate to say it, but Grand Cru isn't exactly a style. It might be something various breweries have, but it's not a general style. It simply implies "best of the best" or their top quality beer.

For example, Allagash Grand Cru is simply their Tripel (might be their Dubbel, don't remember which) with spices added to make it a winter beer.

However, it's usually a Belgian Strong Ale of some sort, some are dark, some are pale, but most are high in alcohol.

Yeah, I know it's not officially a style. But I've seen it around enough to call it that in my book. Thanks for reading the blog.
